Are Beer and Wine Safer Than Liquor? No. Alcohol is alcohol. It can cause you problems no matter how you consume it. One 12-ounce bottle of beer or a 5-ounce glass of wine (about a half cup) has as much alcohol as a 1.5-ounce shot of liquor.
The lethal limit of alcohol in the blood for most people is around 0.40%; this amount of alcohol is roughly the equivalent of 12 drinks (for women) or 16 drinks (for men). When an individual is also taking medications such as antihistamines, opioid pain-killers, or sedatives, the lethal limit for alcohol is lowered considerably.
Alcohol dependence is the most severe alcohol disorder and is characterized by tolerance and withdrawal.
