  • Youth who drink alcohol are more likely to experience changes in brain development that may have life-long effects.
  • In 2008 the National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that 28% of youth aged 12 to 20 years drink alcohol and 19% reported binge drinking.
  • According to the National Household Survey on Drug Use and Health and the College Alcohol Study, From 1999 to 2005, the number of college students ages 18-24 who reported consuming five or more drinks on at least one occasion within the past thirty days increased from 41.7% to 44.7%, and the proportions who drove under the influence of alcohol in the past year increased from 26.5% to 28.9%.
  • Alcohol is made as plant sugars in fruits come into contact with a fungus called yeast and they begin to ferment; as they rot, they will excrete a toxic substance called ethanol or ethyl alcohol--or simply alcohol. In the fermentation process, the yeast continues to feed on the plant sugars, thus the alcohol concentration levels rise; once these levels get closer to 14 percent, the yeast dies, quite literally, of alcohol poisoning.
