There is much research to suggest that reducing the supply of alcohol would greatly reduce the amount of drunk-driving accidents; currently, several comprehensive community wide efforts in this area have proven to be effective.
Nearly two-thirds of children 15 and younger who died in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes were riding with the drinking driver, 20% of which were properly restrained at the time of the crash, and that restraint use decreased as the driver's blood alcohol concentration increased.
In severe cases of alcoholism, individuals may begin to experience delirium tremens ('the DTs') when they withdraw from alcohol; this condition in alcoholics can be fatal.
An estimated 20% of alcoholics who try to quit drinking on their own without medical assistance die of alcohol withdrawal delirium.
