Biological children of alcohol dependent parents who have been adopted continue to have increased chances (2-9 fold) of developing alcoholism.
About 20% of teens are "problem drinkers." Problem drinking can result in getting drunk, having accidents related to alcohol use, or getting into trouble with the law, family members, friends or school due to alcohol use.
Between November 2005 and August 2006, over 8,000 students who presented as new patients to the health service at a large public university were screened for high-risk drinking, and almost 2500 students (28%) screened positive on the 5/4 gender-specific high-risk drinking question; high risk drinking is considered five or more drinks per occasion for men and four or more for women.
An estimated 10 percent of 9 to 10 year olds have started drinking alcohol.
