According to the Task Force of the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, despite campus and legislative policy changes that have been implemented by colleges throughout the United States, there has not been any significant change in the amounts of alcohol consumed or patterns of high-risk drinking over the last 20 years.
Social factors can often contribute to alcoholism, as many alcoholics often have poor social skills and do not function well in a variety of social situations. These individuals may initially begin to drink in order to feel more comfortable in social situations, but may later cross over the invisible line between social drinking into alcoholism.
Current research that is related to alcohol use has reported that moderate doses of alcohol may have a mild antioxidant effect; this antioxidant activity tends to overcome some of the detrimental effects that are related drinking.
Some signs of a drinking problem include drinking alone, to escape problems, or for the sole purpose of getting drunk; hiding alcohol in odd places; getting irritated when you are unable to obtain alcohol to drink; and having problems because of your drinking.
